Grains, Seeds & Hay

Okanogan Country contains some of the west’s best hay and grain growing areas. You won’t find the giant mono-crop farms of thousands of acres here, but you will find an abundance of grains and hay being grown in the “old-fashioned” way – in sustainable small farms. One of the advantages of small farms is their ability to grow rare varieties of grains and seeds that you won’t find in grocery and farm supply stores. Many of the farms also mill their own grain right on-site so you can experience the freshest of farm-to-table flours, cereals and grains.

Bluebird Grain Farms in the Methow Valley grows organic heirloom grains such as the ancient wheat Emmer. Emmer was first cultivated in ancient Babylonia, has for many years been considered a relict crop, and is now mounting a comeback as a gourmet specialty grain. It is a nutrient dense grain similar to wheat with higher protein, more fiber, a simpler chromosome structure, and a deliciously sweet nutty flavor. Check with Bluebird Grain Farms for farm and granary tours.
