Cutthroat Classic

This race has a limited number of spots and sells out every year. Race registration includes transportation to the race start and back to Mazama from the finish, a race t-shirt, an aid station, timing, awards and random prizes.

The Course
The mountain course begins at Rainy Pass on the North Cascades Scenic Highway, elevation 4,870 feet. The route follows the Pacific Crest Trail north on a steady, gradual 5 mile climb to Cutthroat Pass, elevation 6,835 feet. Runners then descend 4 miles to Cutthroat Lake (many switchbacks on a 5-10% grade). The course continues gradually downhill for 2 more miles to the Cutthroat Creek Trailhead, elevation 4,480 feet. Total course length is ~11 miles.

Start Times

Self-seeding with six waves. If you wish to run with a friend, please be sure to communicate with each other and register for the same start wave.

** Wave 1 is for elite or very fast runners only; Waves 2 through 5 will have the most runners at their start time. Wave six is for slower runners that plan to speed hike some of the course. All participants must be able to finish in 4 hours or less.

8:00 a.m. wave one; finish time is 
8:03 a.m. wave two; finish time is 1:40-1:59 hours/minutes, no walking

8:06 a.m. wave three; finish time is 2:00-2:30 hours/minutes

8:09 a.m. wave four; finish time is 2:00-2:30 hours/minutes

8:12 a.m. wave five; finish time is 2:00-3:00 hours/minutes

8:15 a.m. wave six: finish time 3:00-4:00 hours/minutes

* Methow Trails is a non-profit organization. Income from this event supports year-round trail operations in the Methow Valley. There are no entry refunds, exchanges, transfers or rollovers after August 1st, and the event may be cancelled due to severe weather conditions, fire, unhealthy air quality, road closures, natural disasters, or threats to local and national security. In the case of a cancellation, Methow Trails will make every effort to reschedule and offer the event on a new date, or offer a partial credit.

Packet Pick-up 
5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 25: Between Winthrop Mtn Sports and Rocking Horse Bakery...we highly recommend this option. Random prizes offered.

6:00 - 6:30 a.m. Saturday, August 26 at the Mazama Store courtyard.

Transportation and Parking
Buses will depart the Mazama Community Center promptly at 7:00 a.m. for the race start at Rainy Pass. Runners may leave bags with extra clothing at the startline. Bags will be transported to the race finish. Busses will shuttle racers from the finish back to the Mazama Community Center at ~30 minute intervals beginning at 10:30 a.m. and ending at noon. 

Parking is very limited at the start and finish and a Northwest Forest Pass is required. A one-day pass is $5.00 and may be purchased at fee tubes at the Rainy Pass and Cutthroat Trailheads (exact cash or check required).

Aid Stations
There will be one aid station at mile 7 with energy gel, water and sport drink. Aid station supplies are packed in by horseback. Mile 7 is up and over Cutthroat Pass so runners are encouraged to carry their own fuel supplies.

Lunch
After the race, enjoy burritos and smoothies, prepared by the Methow Valley Nordic Junior Team. Proceeds help support young athletes develop skills and experience, and race locally, regionally, and nationally. Food will be sold at the Mazama Community Club from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Awards and Divisions
The awards ceremony will begin approximately 12:00pm at the Mazama Community Center. Age divisions are: 17 and under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+

Directions
Mazama Community Club: From Winthrop, proceed approx. 14 miles west on Hwy 20 to mile marker 179. Take a right on Lost River Road. At intersection proceed straight and then right to park in the Mazama Corral Trailhead lot. Packet pick-up is in the Mazama Community Center-the red building on the eastern end of the parking lot.
