Native American

The large Colville Indian Reservation has many historical and cultural activities. The Colville Tribal Museum in Coulee Dam provides a glimpse of the rich heritage of the people who make up the twelve bands of the Colville Confederated Tribes. Historical displays of early Indian settlements, history and lifestyles of the Lakes, Okanogan, Entiat, Chelan, Methow, Moses Columbia, Nespelem, Palouse, San Poil, Nez Perce, Colville and Wenatchi bands that comprise the Colville Confederated Tribes are featured in the museum.

Nespelem is home to the Colville Tribal Cultural Center, the Columbia River Fish Farm, and the grave of Nez Perce Chief Joseph.

The 4th of July Pow Wow (lasting 10 full days) is the Colville Tribe’s largest cultural event and attracts the best singers and dancers throughout Indian Country. In addition, during this festival, stick games and a parade accompany the celebration. The annual Omak Stampede Indian Encampment Powwow is held the second weekend in August and lasts four days. The public is invited to these traditional powwows.
